“Was all this bloodshed and deceit – from Columbus to Cortes, Pizarro the Puritans – a necessity for the human race to progress from savagery to civilization? Was Morison right in burying the story of genocide inside a more important story of human progress? Perhaps a persuasive argument can be made – as it was made by Stalin when he killed pesants for industrial progress in the Soviet Union, as it was made by Churchill explaining the bombings of Dresden and Hamburg, and Truman explaining Hiroshima. But how can the judgment be made if the benefits and losses cannot be balanced because the losses are either unmentioned or mentioned quickly?”

    Idol Fingers

    By Lester | May 20, 2009

I came home from my weekly poetry critique group tonight to learn that Chris Allen won American Idol.

Okay, this is crazy. Nothing against Chris Allen, but he shouldn’t have even made the cut last week, let alone win. Against Adam Lambert? I mean, come on!

One of the people in my poetry critique group mentioned that her stepdaughter text-messaged 500 times to the Idol number in two hours last night. This confirms my earlier suspicion from seeing clips from Chris’s hometown parade, that Idol results are controlled by far too many teenaged and adolescent girls with cell phones.

Now I have to go smack my wife for luring me into watching Idol in the first place this month. Yeesh!

500 times? I hope she has an unlimited plan.
