Oh, if only Ann Richards would start a Drafthouse up here. . . .

Yes, Wrath of Kahn was good, for its time. And I can't really argue with the truism that the even-numbered ones are the good ones.

Not that any of the Next-Gen-based films were anything but forgettable.

I'm sorry you didn't like the new Star Trek. It certainly pushed all the right buttons for me.

Lester,

Amen to magpies! You should come to Austin, sit through a movie at Alamo Drafthouse which is for diehards. When it's a big-deal movie such as Star Trek or Watchmen, they show a little comical warning that ends with a message: "Don't talk during the movie or we'll throw your ass out!"

A favorite of mine is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PUqLWTQCeHM

Their policy is, you get one warning. After that you get tossed with no refund.

As for Star Trek movies. You didn't like Kahn? I remember you coming with us to Undiscovered Country back in 1991 when Eastland had a theater. We enjoyed that, especially after the stinkburger Final Frontier was.

Sadly, I just couldn't like this new one. It was Star Trek for retards because Abrams found the backstory a burden for his explosions and other contrived plot devices. I know it's just fiction but even fiction has boundaries, rules and expectations. Here this was more of Hollywood's sexing it up and agism: would it kill them to make Kirk the captain at 34 as opposed to a young turk in his 20s? I certainly wouldn't put the real USS Enterprise in the hands of a guy in his 20s fresh out of Annapolis and I don't care if his name is John McCain IV.

In the end, it was just a movie. I can only hope Star Trek continues to follow its past path. The odd numbered ones (this would be XI) suck and you have to wait for an even-numbered movie (II, IV, VI and VIII), with X being the only exception.
