    If all you own is a hammer . . .

    …every problem looks like a nail.

    Yes, I love my country, but every time I hear it referred to as “the greatest nation on earth”—see the back flap of Sarah Palin’s new book, for instance—I feel like I’m being hit with a hammer. Truth be told, there are quite a few great nations on this planet, and they don’t all do things the same way.

    Yes, that’s a very shiny hammer in the photo, and yes, it will drive those screws, but it will splinter the hell out of things when it does. Surely for some problems there’s something in the global toolbox better suited than this single instrument of blunt force.
