Why Twitter?

If you haven’t given Twitter a look, I’d definitely recommend it. It’s a free Web application with transformative potential.

If you have given Twitter a look, and weren’t impressed, or just didn’t get it, I’d recommend trying it again. Consider this quote from Al Tompkins of The Poynter Institute: “I have hated Twitter for more than a year. It always seemed silly and a waste of time. But having used it steadily for about three weeks, I find it is a great way for me to pass along quick story ideas as they develop throughout the day.”

URI Valet

Hey, Web coders! For performance testing it’s hard to beat URIValet.com. Not only does it show crunchy stuff like “Server Header Details,” it also lists your download times across the board of connections from 56k to 6 Mbps, displays interactive charts of your page elements, lists your internal and external links (in separate tables), and provides a handy interface for validating your XHTML and CSS.

Link Padding

I just learned a great little Web coding concept called “link padding.” The idea applies mainly to adjacent menu items. Instead of letting the mouseover area default to the bare text of a link, with a blank space between items, text padding uses CSS to space out the items, which means there’s a larger mouseover area around each.

Cheap Local Gas

Here’s a link to an MSN page where you can type in your ZIP code and find a list of gas prices around your town.

I was surprised to find a 20 cent per gallon difference near my own home. That’s at least a couple of bucks on a fill up.
