I’m thrilled to see that the Whispering Vault RPG is available again, even if only in PDF, along with the Dangerous Prey supplement.
The built-in ritualistic mystique is one of the best I’ve seen over the decades. And its approach to horror is refreshing.
Imagine you’re sort of a post-mortal cenobite, protecting reality by capturing elder gods and imprisoning them.
The result is an RPG that needn’t flinch from horror, while still giving players a sense of purpose and hope (so to speak) of success.
As for those player characters, conceptually they’re as individual as you can possibly imagine, each with its own distinct realm to hang out in, between calls to assemble and return to the mortal realm.
You can find a slightly fuller review here, of a pre-release copy I sold a few years ago. Or check out initial comments from myself and other reviewers upon its release in 1994 & 1995.
