My buddy James Pearson has a knack for weird horror role-playing concepts.
If you’re a fan of Tales from the Crypt, Creepy, and/or Eerie magazines, for example, you should give Tales from the Terror Tomb a try. You and your friends play the sort of doomed protagonists of those stories, each with an evil secret past, each with a less-than-honorable desire, and each “working together” to survive a terrifying adventure. He’s included a “Terror Token” concept to affect other players’ dice rolls or help the monster, basically throwing them under the bus to survive longer than they, but also revealing a few details of your secret shame. Lots of fiendish fun!
This time around, he’s designed a game in which you play slasher flick villains working together to defeat a greater evil. Once again he’s come up with a clever rationale for why such characters would be working together, while giving them some leeway to use their particular supernatural powers in scenes along the way to that climax.
This is James’ seventh RPG, by my count, including sci-fi, post-apocalyptic, kids-on-bikes mystery, and walking mutant killer fish. His love for and insight into each genre really shows.
It’s been my pleasure to have him adopt and adapt a couple of my RPG engines as core mechanics. What he builds upon them has always been delightful.
Take a gander at the Kickstarter, share the link, and check out his other RPGs. If you see him at a convention, be sure to say “Hi,” and get in on one of his games if you can. He’s a great guy, and a fun game host!
